Emergency Care for Pet Toxin Ingestion

Toxic exposure can quickly turn life-threatening. Whether your dog ate chocolate or your cat ingested a household medication, GVETS is equipped to treat a wide range of poisoning cases. Our team acts fast to identify the toxin and administer appropriate care, and if required/needed, we can monitor your pet’s condition throughout the night.

As the region’s only overnight emergency animal hospital, GVETS offers critical support when immediate action is essential.

What We Treat

We provide after-hours care for a broad range of toxin-related emergencies, including:

  • Ingestion of chocolate, xylitol, human medications, or cleaning products
  • Snake bites and insect stings
  • Toxic plant or food ingestion (grapes, onions, etc.)
  • Rodenticide or pesticide exposure
  • Accidental overdoses of pet medications

Whether it’s a dog that ate chocolate or a cat with a toxin emergency, our goal is to stabilize your pet and prevent further harm.

How We Treat Poisoning Emergencies

Our emergency care team works quickly to assess symptoms, identify the toxin, and begin treatment right away. We also provide overnight monitoring and support for pets who require extended care.

Available Treatments and Services:

  • Induced vomiting (if appropriate and safe)
  • Activated charcoal administration
  • IV fluid support if outpatient care is indicated and hospitalization is required
  • Antitoxins or medications to counteract the effects
  • Bloodwork and diagnostic imaging
  • Pain management and oxygen support as needed

If your pet was bitten by a snake, we provide immediate snake bite treatment, including pain relief, antivenom support if necessary, and critical monitoring for shock or swelling.

When to Seek Emergency Treatment

Call or bring your pet to GVETS right away if you notice:

  • Ingestion of a toxic substance (cat or dog ate chocolate, meds, food, etc.)
  • Vomiting, drooling, tremors, or seizures
  • Pale gums or signs of collapse
  • Swelling or puncture wounds from a possible snake bite
  • Unusual behavior, lethargy, or rapid breathing

Appointments are NEVER needed, but please call ahead if possible so we can prepare for your arrival. We are ALWAYS open for walk-ins whenever we are open.
